ON.energy has launched a new medium-voltage uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system designed specifically for AI data centers.

The company claims that it is the first UPS to be purpose-built to handle the unique power demands of large-scale AI compute facilities.

According to ON.energy, traditional UPS systems struggle to manage the rapid load changes and voltage fluctuations typical of AI workloads. The company claims that its new offering, AI UPS, can act as a dynamic interface between data centers and the grid, providing grid-safe resilience while accelerating interconnection timelines.

“AI UPS is the new standard for how to interconnect AI data centers to the grid - faster, safer, and more resilient,” said Alan Cooper, co-founder and CEO of ON.energy.

The system is designed to scale from megawatt to gigawatt levels in both grid-connected and off-grid environments. It is able to absorb transient loads and fluctuations from GPU clusters, helping to stabilize the grid and protect on-site generation. The company contends that this, in turn, allows faster deployment of large-scale AI campuses, which are now among the world’s largest single power consumers.

Unlike many conventional UPS units, ON.energy’s AI UPS is grid-interactive, enabling data center operators to participate in energy markets and earn additional revenue from their infrastructure. According to ON.energy, operators could generate “millions of dollars annually per 100MW of IT load” by leveraging the system in grid services or energy savings programs.

“We engineered AI UPS to set a clear technical standard for what grid-safe data center interconnection looks like,” said Ricardo de Azevedo, co-founder and CTO of ON.energy. “It’s a scalable foundation for the next era of AI infrastructure, one that protects both the data center and the grid.”

The company has said that deployments of the UPS are already underway at several hyperscale data centers across the US.

Founded in 2016, ON.energy is based in Miami, Florida. In addition to the development of UPS systems, the company also develops utility-scale energy storage systems, with more than 400MWh currently under construction.

ON.energy is not the only company to launch a UPS focused on the AI data center market. Earlier this month, Solidion Technology announced its Peak Series UPS, which the company said it expressly aimed at AI data center developers.
