Data center provider OData has expanded its wind supply capacity from the 212MW Assuruá wind farm in Xique-Xique, Bahia, Brazil.
The increase is tied to a new agreement with Serena Energia and represents a 135 percent increase in contracted volume from the wind farm.
The agreement is allied to OData's position as Brazil's first Latin American data center provider to reach 100 percent renewable energy usage.
The parties signed an initial agreement in March 2023 when OData acquired a minority stake in the project.
Commenting on the agreement, Ricardo Alário, CEO of OData, stated, "This expansion of our partnership with Serena strengthens our ESG commitment and positions us competitively in the global market."
Update: The company CEO provided DCD with further information about the Latin renewable market and the potential of using other renewable technologies.
For Alário, the Brazilian market offers significant opportunities for data center operators seeking renewable energy to power their facilities.
He stated: "Brazil is well positioned to be a very important hub of sustainable data centers. Currently, more than 90 percent of the electricity in the country is provided by renewable sources. Additionally, Brazil has one of the best conditions for producing wind and solar energy in the world, ensuring that we will be able to have new sources of green energy as the data center industry expands."
On the potential for other renewable technologies to power its facilities, Alário said: "We are currently studying other types of renewable energy, including solar, given the great potential we have in Brazil."
OData is a subsidiary of Aligned Data Centers, which acquired the firm in May 2023. Odata has operational facilities across the Latin American market, including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico. The company broke ground on its fourth data center in Mexico in July of this year, and its fifth Brazilian facility that same month.
