Indian data center developer Nxtra by Airtel has signed a new renewable energy agreement with AmpIn Energy Transition in Rajasthan and Karnataka, India.

The power-wheeling agreement will see the supply of 125.65MW of solar-wind hybrid energy through Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) connected plants. Following the close of the agreement, the partners will now have signed contracts for more than 200MW of power.

The capacity will be delivered to Nxtra over two phases from two projects in Rajasthan and Karnataka. AmpIn has already been supplying Nxtra with power through intra-state, open-access plants in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Odisha.

A power-wheeling agreement is an arrangement that permits a generator, such as an independent power producer, to sell electricity to an end user while also utilizing the existing transmission or distribution network to transport the power.

Nxtra has committed to sourcing 100 percent of its power needs from renewable sources, becoming the first data center company in India to commit to this goal. The company operates the largest network of data centers in the country, with more than 120 Edge locations and 12 data centers, representing more than 400MW of capacity.

Last November, the company announced plans for a 200MW data center across a 40-acre site in Hyderabad, India. In 2023, the company launched its African arm, Nxtra Africa, with plans to develop five hyperscale data centers on the continent.

AmpIn is one of India’s largest renewable energy developers, with more than 5GW of capacity across 23 states. Last April, the company launched a 100MW solar farm in Bhadla, Rajasthan, with the power produced supplied to Amazon Web Services to decarbonize its energy consumption in the country.
