An Edge data center has been launched in Mumbai, India.

Techno Digital, the digital infrastructure arm of Techno Electric & Engineering Company Limited (TEECL), today announced the commissioning of its Mumbai Edge Data Center (EDC) located in Mahalakshmi, South Mumbai.

According to Techno’s website, the facility totals 800kW across 55 racks. The facility is connected to RailTel’s 63,000km (39,146 mile) fiber backbone.

The facility was developed in partnership with RailTel as part of a wider initiative to build a distributed network of Edge data centers across more than 100 cities in India.

Following Mumbai, the company plans to launch five additional Edge locations “in quick succession,” with a long-term roadmap to scale to 102 locations over the next three to four years, totaling 200MW.

Techno Digital launched in May 2025 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Indian power infrastructure firm Techno Electric.

RailTel first outlined plans for a network of Edge data centers across India in 2022, seeking a partner for the project. Techno Digital joined the project in 2024.

Amit Agrawal, president of Techno Digital, added: “In a city like Mumbai, where milliseconds can impact outcomes, infrastructure placement becomes critical. This facility combines low-latency architecture, strong connectivity, and sovereign infrastructure to support performance-critical workloads ranging from trading and fintech platforms to real-time AI inferencing and enterprise applications. It is designed to deliver the reliability and responsiveness required in latency-sensitive environments.”

The company launched a 36MW data center last year in the southern Indian city of Chennai, and it has two more data centers – one in Kolkata offering 20MW and another in Noida offering 18MW – in its development pipeline. Noida is due to go live later this year, and Kolkata in 2027.

The company also lists an Edge facility in Gurugram – a 400kW, 20-rack facility developed in partnership with RailTel – that is fully occupied. Edge locations in Indore, Ganghinager, and Lucknow are also planned.

Formed in 2000 with the aim of modernizing India’s communication infrastructure, RailTel owns fiber along the country’s rail networks. The network runs along more than 60,000 route kilometers (37,282 miles) and covers more than 6,000 railway stations across India.
