Nvidia's CEO said that the company still expected to make a major investment in OpenAI, but downplayed a previous pledge to invest up to $100 billion.

Jensen Huang's comments come after a Wall Street Journal report noted that OpenAI had expected the September pledge to be finalized within weeks, but still has yet to progress.

At the time, the investment was linked to a planned 10GW OpenAI buildout, featuring Nvidia hardware.

At the time, Huang called it “the largest computing project in history," but the company's CFO said that the deal had not passed the letter of intent stage as of December.

The WSJ claimed that Huang has also privately criticised a lack of discipline in OpenAI's business approach and shared concern about the competition it faces from Google, Anthropic, and others.

Asked about the article, Huang said it was “nonsense” to say he was unhappy with OpenAI.

“Sam is closing the round and we will absolutely be involved,” Huang added. “We will invest ‍a great deal of money, probably the largest investment we’ve ever made.”

Speaking at a press event in Taipei, Taiwan, Huang said: “We never said we were going to invest $100 billion in one round. They invited us to invest up to $100 billion. And, of course, we were very happy and honored."

He declined to share how much the company expects to invest. OpenAI is believed to be targeting raising $100bn at an $830bn valuation. Amazon is in talks to invest as much as $50bn in OpenAI during that round.
