Amazon is in talks to invest $50 billion in OpenAI.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is in negotiations with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman over the investment, with the generative AI firm hoping to raise $100bn in a round that would value it at $830bn.

OpenAI is in talks with Nvidia, SoftBank, and sovereign wealth funds for the other $50bn.

Amazon and OpenAI discussed a $10bn investment back in December, with the company considering using AWS' custom Trainium AI chips.

In November, OpenAI signed a $38 billion multi-year cloud deal with AWS for access to Nvidia GB200s and GB300s. The seven-year contract is just one of a wider series of cloud and data center commitments signed by OpenAI, worth some $1.4 trillion.

The $50bn investment negotiation comes the same week that Amazon confirmed it plans to lay off 16,000 workers.

The company has also invested billions in rival generative AI business Anthropic, and is developing Rainier supercomputers for the company.
