The data center developer joins more than 560 organizations that have signed up for the initiative. Signatories to the pledge include Google, Equinix, Vantage, Iron Mountain, Sabey Data Centers, Atlas Edge, Colt DCS, and telco T-Mobile.

As part of the initiative, signatories commit to the regular measurement and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions, the implementation of clear decarbonization strategies including the use of renewable energy systems, and the neutralization of remaining emissions through the use of extensive offsets.

Commenting on the announcement, NTT CEO Abhijit Dubey said: “By joining The Climate Pledge, we are committing to accelerated action and innovation to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. We are excited to collaborate with the global community of signatories to share knowledge and best practices to build a better future for the generations to come.”

The company’s Global Data Center division, NTT GDC, recently released its first sustainability report. In the report, the company revealed that around 40 percent of its total energy use was attributed to renewable energy resources. The company has signed several PPAs to support this, including two in Japan.

The report also noted that between 2022 and 2023, total Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions dropped from 2,108 ktCO2e to 2,042 ktCO2e – increases in Scope 1 and 3 emissions were offset by a drop in Scope 2; though still up on the 2021 baseline of 1,873 ktCO2e.

The company operates a global network of more than 150 data centers in more than 20 countries. Last month, the company acquired land across the US, Europe, and APAC for 1GW of data center development.
