Harris County, home to Houston and the third most populous county in the US, appears to be the worst affected, with more than 692,000 people without power.

Montgomery, Fort Bend, and San Jacinto have also been heavily hit.

So far, four fatalities have been confirmed in Texas since the storms hit yesterday evening.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire said that parts of the state have been hit by 100mph winds, while other outlets have reported that tornados have potentially caused damage too.

Flights have been grounded at Houston's two main airports due to the weather, while Houston's Independent School District has canceled classes today at all of its schools.

Both AT&T and Verizon have told DCD that the storms have led to some network issues.

"Due to last night’s severe storms and subsequent power outages, a small number of customers in the Greater Houston area may be experiencing service interruptions. Verizon is utilizing all available resources to fully restore service," said a Verizon spokesperson.

In a similar statement, an AT&T spokesperson said: "Some of our customers in the greater Houston area may be experiencing wireless and wireline service impacts, primarily due to power outages from recent severe weather. We are working as quickly and safely as possible to restore service as our network teams have begun making their initial assessment of the impact. We understand how important it is to stay connected and continue to work until all service is restored."
