Canadian telco Rogers Communications has bolstered its 5G network ahead of next month's FIFA World Cup.

The country is co-hosting the flagship international soccer tournament along with the US and Mexico. To support this, Rogers has enhanced its 5G network in host cities Toronto and Vancouver.

As part of Rogers' preparation for the tournament, the telco has invested CA$22 million ($16m) to upgrade its 5G+ network at BMO Field, Toronto, and the surrounding areas close to the stadium.

"These enhancements ensure our network is ready for global events like FIFA, while delivering long‑term benefits for the local Toronto community," said Mark Kennedy, chief technology officer, Rogers.

The upgrades will support connectivity for fans at live stadium events, delivering faster speeds, lower latency and more capacity.  

Rogers said it has added 16 cell towers in downtown Toronto to deal with the traffic demands, while also boosting the in-stadium wireless system at the stadium.

Additional 5G+ spectrum has also been deployed for supporters, while more network infrastructure outside the stadium and at fan zones across the city has been installed. Rogers has also boosted connectivity at hotels and transportation hubs, including Pearson International Airport, Union Station, and some TTC subway stations in the city.

The carrier noted it will also leverage temporary cellular solutions, including the deployment of Cells on Wheels (COWs) and Cells on Light Facilities to support high‑traffic areas in downtown Toronto.

Rogers has also invested CA$5 million ($3.64m) in the country's other host city, Vancouver, including at BC Place, the venue where some games will be held.

Last month, US carrier Verizon announced plans to provide Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and private 5G network services at this summer's FIFA World Cup. Verizon secured the US connectivity contract for the tournament back in 2024.

In total, 48 teams are set to take part in this year's World Cup, making it the largest ever by number of participants.
