Virgin Media O2 has deployed its 500th Giga site in the UK.

The carrier announced the milestone this week, completing the deployment in North Elgin, Scotland.

These Giga sites combine low-, mid-, and high-band spectrum with Massive MIMO technology and are designed to boost network performance by giving customers faster speeds, better coverage, and greater capacity.

The upgrades are part of the company's £700 million ($935m) Mobile Transformation Plan, which the carrier pledged earlier this year as part of its plans to bolster its network infrastructure.

According to Virgin Media O2, each Giga site is able to deliver ten times more capacity than previous infrastructure.

The deployment of the 500th site means that Virgin Media O2 is halfway to reaching its total of 1,000 sites.

“Reaching 500 Giga sites is a major milestone in the transformation of our mobile network," said Jeanie York, chief technology officer, Virgin Media O2.

"As customers use more data than ever before, these cutting-edge sites are helping us add capacity where it’s needed most and deliver a faster, more reliable experience across the UK. We’re not slowing down, with more towns and cities set to benefit throughout the year as we continue investing around £2 million ($2.68m) per day in our mobile network.”
