As reported by Agence Ecofin, MTN Benin launched its 5G network last week.

In launching the service, MTN has beaten domestic rival telcos Moov Africa Benin and Celtiis. Both are said to be trialing the technology.

“We are honored to bring 5G to Benin, a technology that will serve as a catalyst for progress in countless aspects of life and business […] With 5G, we are laying the foundation for innovation, economic growth, and opportunities that strengthen individuals and communities,” said Uche Ofodile, managing director of MTN Benin.

Further details about network vendor partners were not noted, though MTN stated the importance of 5G for use cases such as gaming, streaming, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Earlier this year, MTN Benin announced a three-year investment plan of $215 million, to modernize infrastructure, expand its network, and support the development of 5G.

The carrier, the biggest in Benin with around 50 percent market share, serves 8.4 million mobile customers.

In July, Canadian infrastructure company NuRAN Wireless revealed plans to deploy 200 sites for MTN in Benin, West Africa.

NuRAN will deploy the sites, which will cover 2G, 3G, and 4G, for the carrier in rural parts of the country.
