Network operator Moov has launched 5G services in Benin.
The telco confirmed its 5G network went live on April 24. Ecofin Agency reports that the carrier has deployed more than 230 5G sites, beginning in some of the country's major cities.
Moov has become the second telco in Benin to launch 5G services after MTN went live with 5G back in November 2024.
"5G represents a major technological breakthrough. It already delivers spectacular speeds, up to 10 times faster than 4G, enabling near-instant downloads, streaming, and interaction," said Mostafa El Houti, director of marketing and communication, Moov Benin.
"However, the real revolution lies in ultra-low latency […] Response time becomes almost immediate, opening the way for real-time uses such as immersive reality, online gaming, and telemedicine."
Moov's 5G network currently spans major urban areas in the south of the country, including Cotonou, Abomey-Calavi, Porto-Novo, and Ouidah, plus northern cities such as Parakou, Nikki, and Kandi.
The telco will expand its 5G network to more cities across the country in the future.
Moov is estimated to have around 2.6 million mobile customers, and is the third-largest carrier in the country behind MTN, which has more than 8 million customers, and Celtiis, which only launched in 2022 but has an estimated 3.5 million subscribers. Celtiis is yet to launch 5G, but is testing the technology.
