A new data center could be coming to Ontario, Canada.

Bob Bailey, a member of Ontario’s Provincial Parliament, said on Thursday that a data center could be coming to the southern border city of Sarnia.

Details about the facility’s location, size, and capacity are sparse. Bailey has said that the data center project could help expedite the development of a gas-fired 500MW power plant at the now-defunct coal-fuelled Lambton Generating Station.

Bailey hinted that the data center would offer at least 100MW of capacity, saying that other data centers in the province needed that amount of energy at minimum, according to The Petrolia Lambton Independent.

This could be related to a statement put out by Canada’s government in January, which said that it would “explore mechanisms” to enable large-scale commercial AI data centers with a minimum capacity of 100MW to be built in the country.

The comments have already attracted some backlash from online commentators on a Reddit group devoted to residents of Sarnia.

Sarnia is a city in Southwestern Ontario that borders the American state of Michigan. Although the city is not a data center hotspot, the area around Ontario’s capital, Toronto, boasts one of Canada’s largest concentrations of data centers by quantity and capacity.
