US energy firm Liberty Energy has formed a joint venture (JV) alongside powered land and data center development firm PowerBridge to support the development of a planned 2GW data center in West Texas.

As part of the agreement, Liberty Energy subsidiary Liberty Power Innovations will design, develop and operate scalable, modular power generation architecture for the data center.

The JV is expected to support the development of PowerBridge’s Alpha Digital Campus, a planned 2GW powered campus in West Texas. The initial phase of the data center is expected to consist of 300MW of generation capacity, with the option to expand over time. First power at the site is expected in Q4 of 2027, with deployment continuing through the first half of 2028. It is unclear what form of generation will power the campus. The project was announced in April, and is slated to be sited on 3,400 acres in Reeves County, Texas.

Formed last year to develop large-scale data center campuses on LandBridge-owned land, PowerBridge is led by Alex Hernandez, who previously served as founder and CEO of Cumulus Data and CEO of Talen Energy. The campus is reportedly in close proximity to the Waha natural gas hub.

Liberty Energy was founded by current US Energy Secretary Chris Wright in 2011. It has signed several deals in recent years to power the data center sector. Most recently, in January, it inked a deal with Vantage Data Centers to deliver up to 1GW of power capacity over the next five years, including a reserved 400MW of generation capacity scheduled for 2027. Before this, the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding with DC Grid to deliver off-grid gas generation to the data center sector.
