A large data center campus is planned at a former aluminum works in Anglesey, North Wales, UK.
First reported by Anglesey Free Port, the 213-acre site was acquired by ferry operator Stena in 2022 and has been renamed Prosperity Parc.
The site was originally a Smelting aluminum works before it was closed down in 2009 and turned into a materials recycling site by Orthios. The business collapsed in 2022, leading to the Stena acquisition.
The application was filed by Stena subsidiary Anglesey Land Holdings, with Cadnant Planning as the appointed consultant for the project.
Part of the plans includes developing a 238,000 sqm (2.5 million sq ft) data center and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with a target capacity of 349MW, according to the pre-application filed by Cadnant Planning.
The project is expected to see more than £1 billion ($1.28bn) investment into the site.
Other specifications have not yet been shared, including timelines for construction.
“This application serves as a line in the sand in respect of the old Anglesey Aluminium site, and - through our close collaboration with Stena Line on Anglesey Freeports - heralds as a new start in terms of significant job creation,” said Councillor Llinos Medi, Isle of Anglesey county council leader and economic development portfolio holder.
“We will continue working with Stena Line to ensure we can maximize the opportunities for the businesses and residents of Anglesey.”
The development is said to eventually create between 1,000 and 2,000 jobs.
There are few data centers in North Wales, with only one facility owned by Hosting UK listed on Data Center Map.
