Data center developers are looking to set up shop in Yuma, Arizona, according to Yuma Mayor Douglas Nicholls.

Nicholls said on Facebook last week that “data centers are interested in coming to Yuma, and next week during our Yuma City Council retreat we will begin discussing the topic of data centers.”

Nicholls added that no specific company had yet submitted an application or request to build a data center.

The Mayor also emphasized that his company, a civil engineering firm called Core Engineering Group, “is not tied to nor connected to any construction of a data center.”

Data centers were a prominent topic of discussion in a City Council meeting on Wednesday, April 1, which saw a presentation from a local business development organization – the Greater Yuma Economic Development Corporation – that featured potential data center projects.

Some audience members also spoke in opposition to any hypothetical data centers.

Yuma is located in the southwestern portion of Arizona. Most of the state’s data centers are located in and around Phoenix, which is one of the US’ largest data center markets.
