Ireland’s Greencoat Renewables has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Keppel DC REIT that will see it supply the data center operator with wind energy.

The PPA will see Keppel purchase 67GWh of renewable energy generated at Greencoat’s Ballybane Phase 1 wind farm in County Cork, Ireland.

The ten-year agreement covers the entire output of the Ballybane facility, which Greencoat has operated since purchasing the site in 2018.

Paul O’Donnell, investment manager at Greencoat Renewables, said the company was “delighted” to agree the PPA.

He said: “This partnership evidences the significant opportunity for Greencoat Renewables, as the largest operator of wind assets in Ireland, to provide renewable electricity to the growing Irish data center market.

“In successfully re-contracting Ballybane Phase 1, we have demonstrated our ability to create and sustain long-term value for our investors.”

Greencoat says it manages 1,495.9MW of renewable energy generation infrastructure across Ireland and continental Europe.

According to its website, the Ballybane wind farm comprises 21 Enercon E70 2.3MW turbines. It was launched in 2008, with the second and third phases becoming operational in 2015 and 2017, respectively.

Keppel's Dublin 1 site in the Citywest Business Campus, was built in 2000. Built in 2013, Keppel acquired its Ballycoolin site – previously owned by Dataplex and now known as Dublin 2– in 2017.

Keppel, which, like many companies, wants to reach net zero across its operations by 2030, has shown itself willing to embrace alternative sources of energy in Ireland.

In January it applied to build battery storage systems at its two data centers in Dublin amid ongoing concerns about the amount of electricity available in Ireland’s grid for data centers.
