Japan's four main mobile network operators have agreed to a framework that ensures the rapid restoration of communication networks in the event of large-scale disasters.
In a joint announcement, NTT Group, KDDI Corporation, SoftBank Corp., and Rakuten Mobile confirmed they will share key network assets during national emergencies.
NTT Group consists of NTT Corp, NTT East, NTT West, NTT Docomo, and NTT Communications.
Although the framework was only announced this week, the agreement officially started on December 1, 2024.
The framework will see all four carriers jointly use each other's assets, including business facilities, accommodation, storage sites, and refueling stations.
The purpose of the cooperative agreement is to restore communication network connectivity quickly in affected areas.
Japan's carriers will also share information when assessing damage and restoring networks.
This cooperation includes identifying issues in fixed-line networks that disrupt networks at critical locations such as municipal facilities and hospitals.
The country is susceptible to natural disasters such as earthquakes, which in the past have caused significant damage to the country, and disruption to the country's infrastructure, including its mobile network infrastructure.
