IT systems in the region of Basilicata, southern Italy, have been restored following a data center failure between Sunday and Monday.

The regional government said that the Central Reservation Center (Centro Unico di Prenotazione) serving Basilicata’s healthcare services was back online on Wednesday.

Technicians worked for “several hours” to fix the failure at the region’s data center in Potenza, which paralyzed its main IT system, and ruled out a cyberattack.

An investigation found the cause of the outage to be an “anomaly” in the data center’s main cooling system and the failure of the backup system to start. This caused instability in the data storage systems, resulting in the temporary unavailability of some services.

“The initial interventions focused on the healthcare sector, the most sensitive area for the community, with the aim of fully restoring essential services,” said the regional government in a press release.

“Based on the investigations, it was ruled out that the event was attributable to a cyberattack, nor was there any evidence of unauthorized access to systems or the theft, exfiltration, or unauthorized disclosure of personal data.”

The outage also impacted some administrative deadlines, including scholarship and housing applications for university students, and caused the postponement of Tuesday’s Regional Council meeting, Italia 2 News reported.

While Italy has around 200 data center facilities nationwide, these are heavily concentrated in northern and central hubs like Milan and Rome. Southern Italy's data center infrastructure is sparse, with projects emerging primarily in regions like Puglia.
