Colocation firm Iron Mountain has broken ground on its planned 85MW data center campus in Mumbai, India.

It is working with construction firm Stirling & Wilson on the data center, which will cater for AI workloads.

An opening date for the facility has not been disclosed, but once complete, it will complement Iron Mountain’s two existing facilities in Mumbai, which offer a total of 8.3MW.

Writing on LinkedIn, Rajesh Tapadia, CEO of Iron Mountain India, said: “This 85MW campus underscores both how far we've come and where we are headed. Designed for high-density, compute-intensive AI workloads, combining scale, speed-to-market, and intelligent engineering.

Iron Mountain has been operating in India as a solo venture since last year, when it purchased data centers operated by WebWerks. It had previously worked with WebWerks as part of a joint venture, but took full control in April.

The deal gave Iron Mountain an Indian portfolio of six data centers located in five Indian markets - Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, and Noida - with total IT capacity of 14MW.

As well as Mumbai, the company is developing two other new campuses, in Chennai and Noida. The total capacity of all three planned campuses could reach 142MW.
