German engine manufacturer Innio has announced a 620MW follow-on order from an undisclosed hyperscale data center developer in the US.

The deal adds to a 1.1GW order announced back in July, bringing the total contracted capacity to 1.72GW. The initial deal is expected to support the deployment of more than 200 Innio Jenbacher J624 engines, providing behind-the-meter prime power generation across sites in the US. Deliveries of the engines are scheduled in phases.

“This follow-on order, coming just months after the customer’s initial 1.1GW order, underscores the strength of customer demand and continued confidence in Innio. Our containerized Jenbacher solutions deliver what data centers need most: fast deployment, high power density, fuel efficiency, and the performance to support demanding AI workloads,” said Dr. Olaf Berlien, President and CEO of Innio. “Repeat orders of this scale, combined with long-term service agreements, strengthen our backlog and expand the services base that underpins our business model,” added Dr. Berlien.

The 620MW will be delivered as containerized Jenbacher J624 generators. The Jenbacher J624 is Innio's high-speed gas engine aimed at data center operators, offering containerized, fast-deployment options intended to suit demanding AI load profiles. The engine has a capacity of 4.5MW and is the largest of its Type 6 group.

In addition to the engine order, the company has also signed a long-term full maintenance agreement covering the first 500MW of the previously ordered capacity. The maintenance agreement includes all spare parts and labor through a major overhaul and supports long-term equipment availability and performance.

Innio has increasingly been focusing on the data center market over the past year. Earlier this year, it completed a backup power system demonstration project for data centers using 100 percent hydrogen-fueled gas engines in partnership with the Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers. According to the companies, the test validated that clean hydrogen gas engines can handle heavy data center demands. The tests were conducted at Innio's research facilities in Jenbach, Austria, and Fredericia, Denmark.
