Indian network vendor Tejas Networks has signed an agreement with NEC Corporation to manufacture and supply 5G massive MIMO radios.

Tejas didn't disclose the financial terms of the contract that it has secured with the Japanese technology giant.

The announcement follows reports in January that NEC was preparing to end its development of 4G and 5G base stations.

"Today's milestone furthers our collaboration with Tejas Networks for 5G massive MIMO radio and to achieve supply-chain diversification which helps in mitigating risks to our customers by building a resilient, flexible globalized ecosystem," said Masayuki Kayahara, corporate SVP of global network division at NEC Corporation.

"Our partnership with NEC will accelerate wireless innovation by leveraging our respective expertise in carrier-class product development for global telcos," added Arnob Roy, chief operating officer and executive director of Tejas Networks.

Tejas Networks, part of Tata Group, designs and manufactures wireline and wireless networking products for telcos, ISPs, utilities, defense, and government entities in more than 75 countries.

The company's 4G and 5G radio access network (RAN) offering, includes 32TR and 64TR massive MIMO radios, which comply to both 3GPP and O-RAN standards.

Last year, Tejas announced a partnership with Japanese carrier Rakuten Symphony to bolster Tejas' Open RAN push in India.
