Indian telco BSNL is reportedly building five data centers as part of its network expansion.

The company will target five strategic locations across India, one of which will be Guwahati, a city in the northeastern state of Assam.

Assam’s chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, revealed the news at an event on Sunday, according to the report from APAC Media.

He said construction has already begun on the data center, which will be located at an existing IT park near Borjhar Airport. “These facilities will create substantial local employment, enabling Assam’s educated youth to work within the state instead of moving to cities like Bengaluru,” Sarma said.

The data center will apparently support BSNL’s 4G network, which is being rolled out across India using equipment built in the country. The telco is aiming to upgrade this network to 5G in the near future, and is targeting 6G by 2030, though this may prove optimistic given that 6G has yet to be deployed anywhere in the world. State-owned BSNL started 5G trials last year.

Sarma noted Assam’s growing digital infrastructure prowess, citing a new 5G lab at Gauhati University and a Tata Group’s semiconductor plant in the town of Jagiroad. “From data centers to chip manufacturing, Assam is emerging as a nerve centre of India’s technology growth,” he said.

The locations of BSNL’s other planned data centers were not disclosed. The company owns more than 10,000 acres of land in India, and has reportedly been in talks with data center operators in a bid to lease out parts of its estate for digital infrastructure projects.
