Indian telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is looking to monetize its assets and is reportedly in discussions to lease its land to data center operators.

The state-owned company, which this week launched a new brand logo and services, confirmed it is working on asset monetization plans.

The firm said it was identifying land for data centers for mobile Edge computing. Sources said that Google and Microsoft are amongst the companies BSNL is talking to. Further details were not shared.

The Times of India reports that chairman Robert Jerard Ravi said that while the company looks to improve operational efficiencies, it is working out "innovative ways" to sell, or rent out, land assets.

These include not only leasing out to data storage companies, but also providing them to wind and solar energy players who sell renewables to state governments.

BSNL reportedly owns more than 10,000 acres of land across India. The company has been making efforts to monetize its landbank for years, with reports it was looking to raise funds by selling land dating back to at least 2020.

Company officials were called up for a review meeting by the government earlier this year to assess the firm’s progress on monetizing assets, which have reportedly been slower than hoped.
