BT has announced that long-time chief security and networks officer Howard Watson will retire from his role in March 2026.

Watson will be replaced by Greg McCall, effective January 1, 2026.

McCall will take on the baton from Watson, who has been at BT since 2011, as EE pushes to drive its 5G Standalone network to 99 percent of the population by 2030, and push towards deploying full fiber to 30 million premises across the UK.

Watson has been at BT since 2011, initially joining the company as chief architect. He's also served as chief technology and information officer, and worked in the telecoms industry for more than 40 years.

His role in recent years has seen him drive AI and quantum research. He's overseen the security and operational resilience of BT's network.

Meanwhile, McCall joined BT in 2013, initially as COO for TV and content, before he became chief networks officer in November 2022. During his time at BT, McCall supported the launch of EE's 5G network, delivered the Emergency Services Network for the UK, and led the launch of BT Sport.

"Greg is a fantastic example of the bench strength we have within BT, having contributed over many years to our network leadership position," said Allison Kirkby, chief executive, BT.

"With Howard now passing the baton to Greg, our network, and its trusted status, is in strong hands. We are also all incredibly grateful for Howard’s dedication, deep technical expertise, and the lasting impact he’s made not just on BT, but on the industry, over many years, and wish him well in his retirement.”

Watson called the job the "best job in the world," in a post on LinkedIn.

"I am incredibly proud to have led a team that built our position as the UK’s leading network, led critical research that positions us for an AI and Quantum future, and driven BT’s security and operational resilience for our customers and the UK," said Watson.

"I’m energized by what’s ahead, innovating in AI and cyber security, and shaping a future that’s faster, smarter, safer, and more connected for everyone. It’s a real privilege to lead this next chapter, and I can’t wait to get started," added McCall.
