SUNeVision has signed a strategic partnership with Green Valley Landfill and CLP Power Hong Kong to launch a new renewable energy program in Hong Kong.
As part of the partnership, Hong Kong data center operator SUNeVision has signed a six-year agreement with CLP Power to purchase site-specific renewable energy certificates (RECs).
The RECs are linked to a portion of the energy consumption of SUNeVision Mega Campus in the special administrative region.
GVL’s solar farm is situated at the South East New Territories Landfill in Tseung Kwan O and is scheduled to begin operations in the first half of 2025. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to generate approximately 1.2 million KWh of renewable electricity each year.
“The new initiative marks a significant milestone in our journey towards utilizing 100 percent clean energy by 2050. We will continue to innovate and lead the way towards a sustainable future, promoting a low-carbon society and supporting Hong Kong in achieving net-zero emissions,” said Helen Lo, commercial director at SUNeVision.
SUNeVision Holdings is the largest data center operator in Hong Kong, with seven data centers in the region, including the Mega-i, Mega Gateway, Mega IDC, Mega Plus, and Mega 2. The company also hosts cable landing stations HKIS-1 and HKIS-2.
In March 2023, it launched its seventh data center, the Mega Gateway, in Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong. It is the latest addition to its Mega Campus and covers 200,000 sq ft of floor space (~18,600 sqm) and has a capacity of 20MW.
Following this, the company secured a HK$3 billion (US$383.4m) sustainability-linked loan from HSBC. The loan proceeds are for general corporate funding, including driving the company's long-term sustainability.
