Google has reportedly signed 275MW of clean energy generation agreements across the Asia Pacific (APAC) region over the past year as part of its drive to achieve its goal of using 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030.

The projects span the entire region and include 60MW of contracted solar in Japan, 186MW of wind and solar in India, 20MW solar in Australia, and a 9MW biomass power plant in Singapore.

In addition, it has supported the development of a 1GW pipeline of new solar capacity in Taiwan. The partnership was formed to offer Google's semiconductor suppliers and regional manufacturers a portion of this clean energy capacity.

In addition to the commercial procurement, Google says it has also made a concerted effort to advance regional policies to support cost-effective clean energy deployment and regional market integration.

It is a founding member of the Asia Clean Energy Coalition, which includes other hyperscalers such as Apple, Amazon, and Meta. The coalition was founded to shift policy in key Asian national and regional markets.

Google has a significant data center footprint across APAC, with 11 cloud regions across APAC.

In June, it announced that it was investing $2 billion in developing its first data center and cloud region in Malaysia.

Despite these efforts to embrace clean energy in APAC and elsewhere, in July Google reported that total greenhouse gas emissions from its global operations jumped 48 percent in the last five years, with the company pinning the blame, in part, on its AI data center buildout.
