Google has announced plans for a new subsea cable linking Spain to the US.

“Today, we’re announcing Sol, a new transatlantic subsea cable system to connect the US, Bermuda, the Azores, and Spain,” the company announced. “When it’s complete, Sol will be the only in-service fiber-optic cable between Florida and Europe.”

In the US, the cable will land in Palm Coast, Florida, at a new DC Blox cable landing station (CLS). Google added that it will develop a terrestrial fiber route linking Palm Coast to its South Carolina cloud region.

“The Sol subsea cable’s arrival in Palm Coast will advance Florida’s position as a technology destination and state-of-the-art connectivity hub, putting the Sunshine State at the forefront of digital infrastructure and accelerating AI in the US,” said Brian Quigley, VP, Global Network Infrastructure, Google Cloud. “We look forward to collaborating with DC Blox to increase network reliability and resilience in Florida, the United States, and across the Atlantic.”

In Spain, Google is partnering with Telefónica’s Telxius to land the Sol cable in Santander.

Sol translates to “sun” in Spanish and Portuguese, which the search giant said was a nod to the cable system’s landing points in warmer climates.

The Sol cable will be manufactured in the US. Further details on project capacity or timelines weren’t shared.

Google has invested in some 30 subsea cables in the past 15 years, more than any other hypescaler. Its subsea projects crisscross the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, with many landing on small island nations that have historically lacked major cable investment.

CLS wins for DC Blox and Telxius

Sol is another cable win for both US data center firm DC Blox and Texlius, both of which have partnered with Google before.

News that DC Blox was looking to develop a Florida cable landing station surfaced last year. In its own announcement this week, DC Blox said the 20-acre Palm Coast CLS campus, anchored by the Sol cable, will support up to five additional subsea cables that will land in Flagler Beach. The 10MW facility is expected to be operational by Q1 2027.

DC Blox last year launched a CLS in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Three of the five available cable slots at the facility have already been reserved – two for Google and one for Meta.

Google has two subsea cables that will land at Myrtle Beach: the Firmina cable connecting the US to Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay; and the Nuvem cable connecting to Portugal and Bermuda. Meta, via its Edge Holdings subsidiary, has landed its Anjana cable connecting to Spain from there.

Santander, on Spain’s northern coast, is the landing point for the other end of Meta’s Anjana cable, hosted within Telxius’ landing station.

Telefónica subsidiary Telxius has previously joined Google as a partner on the Firmina, Dunant, Junior, Tannat, and Grace Hopper cable systems. In total, the company offers capacity on more than a dozen subsea cables around Europe as well as North and South America.

Through our submarine landing services, we accelerate project implementation and help expand global networks for our customers,” said Mario Martín, CEO, Telxius.

Details on the Bermuda and Azores landings weren’t shared. Bermuda has one live landing point – St. David’s, which is home to three aging cables (CBUS, Gemini Bermuda, and GlobeNet). Land near Annie’s Bay is set to be the landing point for Google’s upcoming Nuvem cable, due live next year.

Nuvem, which will connect the US to Portugal, is also set to land in the Azores. Nuvem and Sol will be the first international cables to land on the Portuguese islands, though it is connected to the mainland by two domestic cables.
