Australian real estate firm Goodman is planning a new data center campus outside Tokyo, Japan.

The company this week announced it has been selected as the lead development partner for an association of local landowners and stakeholders advancing plans for a potential new data center campus in Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture.

Full details of the planned development haven’t been shared.

Paul McGarry, head of Asia Goodman, said: “Sagamihara has all the hallmarks of a world-class data center location – access to TEPCO Power Grid’s high-voltage network, proximity to Tokyo, and a city government genuinely committed to sustainable growth.”

He continued: “We are delighted to bring our master-planning expertise and our proven track record in Japan and across the globe, and to work alongside the City, its landowners, and its residents to create a high-quality development that delivers lasting value for the community.”

The Asamizodai-Araisono North Association brings together local landowners and stakeholders to develop a master plan for the area in collaboration with Goodman, Nakajima Construction, a local general contractor, and Sagamihara City.

Mayor Kentaro Motomura, City of Sagamihara, added: “Sagamihara City warmly welcomes Goodman’s commitment to developing a world-class data center campus here in our city. This project represents a significant investment in Sagamihara’s future, with the development of advanced digital infrastructure expected to increase tax revenue and create employment opportunities in the city, while delivering long-term value and benefits to the community.”

Traditionally focused on logistics and industrial real estate, Goodman has data center projects in operation or development across Hong Kong, Australia, Germany, the US, France, and Japan.

Globally, Goodman said it has a 6.4GW power bank across 16 metropolitan cities. This includes 700MW of stabilized assets delivered and 400MW in development in supply-constrained markets. The company is currently working on LAX01 Vernon in Los Angeles, HK10 in Hong Kong, and AMS01 in Amsterdam.

The Goodman Business Park in Inzai, Chiba, Greater Tokyo, is home to more than 300MW of data center developments. The company is planning another campus on 45 hectares of land in Tsukuba City, around 50km from Tokyo. The first phase of TY005 in Tokyo is due live in early 2028. The first phase of the 50MW TY006 is due live in 2029.
