An indoor events space largely dedicated to rodeos and livestock could soon host a data center.
Global Stack has proposed building an Edge data center at the Cow Palace, along with a multi-level parking garage and a helicopter landing pad.
Seeking a 100-year land lease, the facility would reportedly total up to 10MW. The company would be looking to develop on land owned by the arena, rather than replacing the venue.
Opened in 1941, Cow Palace (originally the California State Livestock Pavilion) is an indoor arena and events center located in Daly City. It hosts rodeo and livestock shows, as well as sporting and musical events.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Cow Palace was first approached about the project last year. Cow Palace CEO Allison Keaney told the Chronicle that it is still evaluating the proposal and has not made any decisions.
Global Stack, founded in March, intends to build similar sites on at least 70 other fairgrounds across California by 2030. A list of these sites can be found in the company's presentations here and here.
The company was looking to develop an 8-10MW data center at the shuttered Calistoga fairground. However, public backlash against the proposals has led the city’s fairgrounds advisory committee to announce it has discontinued discussions with Global Stack about the project.
Global Stack pitches itself as a developer of Edge data centers, helipads, and parking garages, with a focus on fairgrounds and event sites. It is apparently aiming to develop the different projects via various affiliates: The data center build would be done by MeshClusters LLC; the parking by DAA Parking LLC; and the eVTOL landing network by PanGalatica LLC.
Other fairgrounds and event spaces reportedly contacted by Global Stack include the San Mateo County Event Center, the Solano County Fairgrounds & Event Center, the Tulare County Fairgrounds, the Kings County Fairgrounds, and the Southern California Fair.
Solano County Fair Association CEO Tom Keaney told the Vallejo Sun that he heard a pitch from Global Stack in April, but said that the project is “basically tabled” in Solano County until they learn more information about the company and its proposed plan.
The company has, however, signed agreements with the Kings County Fairgrounds and the Tulare County Fairgrounds to study whether two to five acres of underused property could be leased for projects, according to Fox.
Kings County Fairgrounds CEO Dena Rizzardo told Fox the proposal remains in the feasibility stage and no decisions have been made, with both fairgrounds still evaluating whether the sites are suitable for development.
