German telecoms firm Wobcom has expanded its data center in Wolfsburg.

The company this week announced it is expanding its data center in Wolfsburg's Nordkopf Tower by a new floor, taking its total to five floors within the building.

With the facility, Wobcom supplies Wolfsburg residents with fiber optic connections and hosts servers for local and international business customers.

"With this data center, we are connecting Wolfsburg with the entire world, meeting the highest possible security standards. This enables a digital future with always-available, resilient, and sustainably operated services," says Dalibor Dreznjak, managing director of Wobcom.

The new floor is already leased to Host-Unlimited.de, a brand of Bieber IT GmbH focusing on cloud and game hosting.

"We are delighted to have found a state-of-the-art hyperscaling colocation facility in Wolfsburg with Wobcom's data center, as this provides us with a professional and performance-optimized hosting environment that is carefully planned and consistently designed for efficiency, stability, and security," said Tim Bieber, managing director of Bieber IT GmbH.

Wobcom said it also hosts Google and Netflix in the facility, as well as SON-IX (South-East Lower Saxony Internet Exchange), a local Internet exchange.

Founded in 1996, Wobcom is a wholly owned subsidiary of local city-owned utility Stadtwerke Wolfsburg. It provides broadband, communications, TV, and colocation services, and operates a local fiber network.

Located at Heßlinger Str. 1-5, the Nordkopf Tower was built in 2017 for Stadtwerke and its subsidiaries as an extension to the existing headquarters building next door, which dates back to the early 1960s.

On its website, Wobcom said its data center totals more than 100 racks in the tower.

Up to eight floors of data center space are planned in the Nordkopf Tower, five of which are currently online. The company said it was confident it would expand further in the future to meet demand.
