General Catalyst, a global investment company, is teaming up with Amazon Web Services (AWS) for the development of healthcare AI tools.
AWS will be General Catalyst’s official preferred cloud provider, supplying the necessary technology and compute for the development of solutions for healthcare systems.
General Catalyst’s portfolio companies Aidoc, which applies AI to medical imaging, and Commure, which automates provider workflows with AI, will be the first to participate.
"AWS and General Catalyst believe that AI has immense potential to effect meaningful change in global health care,” said AWS CEO Matt Garman. “Together, we are taking bold steps to improve patient outcomes and make quality care more accessible to all by embedding AI throughout the care journey."
"There's a palpable excitement about the potential of generative AI to transform health care," added Steve Davis, president and CEO of Cincinnati Children's Hospital. "We're eager to explore how it can enhance patient engagement through more personalized communication and education, and alleviate administrative burdens. Continuing our work with General Catalyst and AWS can help turn these possibilities into practical realities that can truly move the needle on care quality, operational efficiency, and patient outcomes."
General Catalyst hopes the partnership will give it access to flexible and scalable compute, while also taking advantage of AWS’ experience in deploying AI and machine learning for healthcare customers. AWS has also in-house developed services for healthcare and life sciences, including AWS HealthScribe, AWS HealthOmics, and AWS HealthImaging.
AWS and General Catalyst will also help healthcare organizations improve their “data strategies” with cloud migrations and cloud technologies.
Hemant Taneja, CEO and managing director of General Catalyst said: "At General Catalyst, we've witnessed firsthand how technologies like AI, applied with the right approach to scaling and problem-solving, can drive real transformation in health care. AWS shares our bold vision for advancing human health through cutting-edge technology. Together, we believe this work will establish a flywheel of innovation and adoption that can be applied to other industries."
General Catalyst has more than $32 billion in assets under management, and as of September 30, 2024, counted more than 800 portfolio companies. The company has previously invested in networking firm Arrcus.
Snack retailer Mondelez also recently selected AWS as its primary cloud provider. Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) also completed its migration to AWS this year.
Earlier this month AWS revealed an $11bn investment plan for new cloud infrastructure in Georgia.
