Facebook is reportedly expanding its Huntsville, Alabama data center.
The social network first announced a $750 million 970,000 square feet (90,116 sq m) facility in 2018, with plans for the facility to open in 2020. Construction was briefly suspended in March due to Covid-19.
AL.com reports that the company received approval for expansion plans from the Huntsville City Council in November which included the purchase of 197 acres from private landowners on top of a 250-acre purchase from the city.

Facebook is reportedly planning to construct two additional buildings for the facility on top of the two original ones located on the North Huntsville Industrial Park. According to a Huntsville council report, Facebook’s investment in the site totals $1.5 billion.
Facebook told AL.com earlier this month that the first building is being prepared for servers while construction is nearing completion on the second building.
“However, today, we are not committing to any additional buildings,” Facebook told AL.com in an email.
Facebook recently announced it was expanding its Eagle Mountain Data Center in Utah for the second time by more than 900,000 sq ft (83,600 sq m) with two new buildings due to be built at the facility. Its planned DeKalb data center in Illinois is also edging closer to reality after overcoming recent local concerns.
