Japanese renewable developer Eurus Energy has partnered with Toyota Tsusho, Toyota Group's general trading arm, to develop a wind-powered data center project in Wakkanai City, Hokkaido, Japan.

The Soya Green Data Center I will be constructed close to the Eurus-operated 42MW Kabaoka Wind Farm. The onshore wind farm reached commercial operations in February 2024 and comprises ten 4.2MW GE Vernova wind turbines.

The wind farm will power the data center via a private wire, representing the first instance of a data center in Japan being powered directly from a wind farm.

The data center is expected to have a capacity of approximately 3MW and will be sited on a 9,900 sqm (106,562 sq ft) plot adjacent to the wind project. Toyota Tsusho will provide data center services for the project, and Eurus will prepare the land, construct the buildings, and be responsible for supplying the power for the data center.

According to the partners, to ensure a consistent power supply, a mechanism will be put in place to procure additional renewable energy if power from the wind farm proves insufficient.

Construction on the project is expected to begin in April, with operations slated for 2027. The companies stating that they are considering expanding the data center's capacity to 10-20MW by 2030 if it proves to be successful. The companies claim that the data center will be designed to be earthquake-resistant.

Eurus has a robust renewable energy portfolio spanning 16 countries. At present, it has a total operating capacity of more than 5GW, with 4.2GW generated by wind projects, and almost 900MW by solar farms. In March of last year, it was revealed as part of a consortium that was planning to construct an offshore floating data center demonstration project off the coast of Yokohama, Japan.
