Ericsson has announced plans to cut up to 1,600 jobs in its home market Sweden.

The network vendor noted that the layoffs are part of plans to "ensure the company's competitive position."

"The proposed staff reduction is part of global initiatives to improve cost position while maintaining investments critical to Ericsson’s technology leadership and the execution of the strategy to deliver high-performing, programmable networks that enable differentiated services and new monetization opportunities," said Ericsson.

Ericsson said it has submitted a notice to the Swedish Public Employment Service, while it has also initiated negotiations with the relevant Swedish trade unions.

At present, Ericsson has around 12,600 employees in Sweden.

It will be the latest round of layoffs in the vendor's home market in recent years, after Ericsson cut 1,200 jobs in 2024 and 1,400 roles in 2023.

Ericsson's total headcount stands at around 90,000 globally, though this is down from around 100,000 three years ago, during which the vendor cut 8,500 jobs worldwide.
