Equinix is to offer retail colo space in an upcoming hyperscale data center in Seoul, South Korea.
The company this week announced SL4, a new International Business Exchange (IBX) retail colo facility due to launch in Q1 2024.
The facility will be housed inside SL2x, an upcoming xScale hyperscale data center located in Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do, and will provide capacity for 475 cabinets.
SL4 will be directly connected to Seoul-based SL1, Equinix's first IBX data center in Korea, via a low-latency optical cable. It will also be connected to the Korea Internet Neutral Exchange (KINX) and Sejong Telecom’s Korea Internet Exchange (KRIX).
“Equinix has and will continue to support our customers in Korea with an interconnected digital ecosystem and robust digital infrastructure,” said Hye-deok Jang, CEO of Equinix Korea. “As Equinix expands its digital platform through the opening of SL4, companies will be able to leverage advanced AI infrastructure and technologies within the ecosystem.”
Equinix announced and opened its first Seoul facility, SL1, in 2019. The 18,000 sq ft (1,680 sqm) facility launched with capacity for 550 cabinets in the first phase.
The company announced plans for two hyperscale facilities in Seoul – SL2x and SL3x – under its xScale brand in early 2022. Developed in partnership with Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC, the $525 million joint venture will total around 45MW.
The 12MW Seoul 2x-1 is set to launch in Q1 2024. According to the company’s Q3 2023 earnings presentation, 2MW of the site has been leased to date.
Equinix is also leasing part of Madrid 3x for its MD6 retail location.
The company released its Q3 2023 earnings earlier this month, with revenue up 12 percent year on year for a total of $2.6 billion. In that quarter alone, the company signed more than 4,200 deals.
