Equinix is to build a new data center in Bogotá, Colombia.
The colo giant this week announced plans for the construction of BG2, a new International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in the capital city.
Scheduled to open in the first half of 2023, the new facility will span 32,000 square feet (2,900 sqm). The initial phase of BG2 will have a capacity of 550 cabinets, with a capacity for 1,100 cabinets at full build-out.
The company said it would be investing $45 million in the project.
“We chose to invest in Colombia because the country has a fast-growing IT sector and is part of the fourth largest economy in LATAM,” said Tara Risser, president of Equinix for the Americas. “The country's economy has prospered over the past decade, fueled by thriving energy and manufacturing sectors. The country is also well-positioned to support companies looking to expand within LATAM, while remaining closely connected to North America. BG2 is another example of our commitment to providing our clients with the right places, partners and possibilities for their current and future digital transformations.”
Equinix currently operates one other Colombian facility, also located in Bogotá. The company took over the two-story, 21,570 sq ft (2,004 sqm) BG1 in 2017 as part of its acquisition of 29 data centers from Verizon Communications Inc.
Equinix’s existing data center presence in LatAm includes facilities in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Santiago Chile; Lima Peru; and Mexico City and Monterrey, Mexico. Earlier this year the company acquired a number of data centers across Chile and Peru from Entel.
