Eviden is to provide an upgrade to an academic supercomputer in Brazil.
The Atos business this week announced that it has signed a new $19.4 million contract with Brazil’s National Laboratory for Scientific Computing (LNCC, aka Laboratório Nacional de Computação Científica) to extend the compute capacity of its Santos Dumont supercomputer.
Based on Eviden’s BullSequana XH3000 architecture, the extension will see the supercomputer's capacity expanded four-fold, reportedly making it the most powerful in Latin America for academic research.
Installed in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, the expansion will add 17 petaflops. Eviden will provide five BullSequana XH3000 racks – featuring the company’s direct liquid cooling technology – that will include 60 CPUs, 62 GPUs (2 x Intel Sapphire Rapids and 4 x Nvidia Hopper HGX H100), and 36 Grace Hopper GPUs with DDN storage.
The system launched in 2015 with 1.1 petaflops of performance; an expansion in 2019 added 1.85 petaflops, based on the Sequana X1000 architecture.
