A data center operated by Iron Mountain in India has been raided by police investigating an illegal telephone exchange.

One man was arrested as part of the raid, according to a report in local news outlet County and Politics.

The data center is located in the Whitefield area of Bengaluru, the state capital of Karnataka.

Following a complaint filed by the Department of Telecom and Vodafone, a team of officials raided the data center and reportedly seized six SIM boxes, 133 SIM cards, 12 data storage servers, and other equipment.

It is alleged that the equipment was being used to convert international calls to local calls, thus cheating service providers out of income. The perpetrators of the fraud are said to have rented space in the data center to set up their operations, though there is no suggestion that Iron Mountain had any knowledge of their activities.

The report said a 35-year-old man, Tufail Ahmed, of Tamil Nadu, was arrested at the scene. He is said to have been working with an associate in Dubai, though it is not known if either man has been charged with an offence.

City police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh told County and Politics that it is the third such illegal telephone exchange police have taken down in the last month, and that data center operators should be aware of how their facilities are being used.

The data center formerly operated under the WebWerks name as part of a joint venture between the company and Iron Mountain. However, it was rebranded as an Iron Mountain facility when the firm took full ownership of WebWerks in April.
