Czech Internet operator and data center provider Seznam.cz has expanded its data center campus in Prague.
The company has added a new building to its existing 3MW Kokura data center in Horní Počernice, Eastern Prague.
The Kokura site was initially launched in 2013 and construction on the new data center hall - dubbed Kokura 3 - began last year in February.
Kokura 3 spans 1,200 sqm (12,916 sq ft) and has a capacity of 2.4MW. The expansion cost approximately 3 million crowns ($132,000) to build.
The company said Kokura 3 shares space with the existing center but is “essentially” an independent data center.
Seznam.cz is a Czech Internet portal and search engine. The company has two other existing facilities in the Czech Republic (aka Czechia); Nagoya and Òsaka. The company traditionally names its data centers after Japanese cities.
Vlastimil Pečinka, technical director at Seznam.cz, said: “We have managed to introduce several innovations here, which, for example, do not exist in Nagoya, which is only a year old. A significant novelty is that we omit the UPS and batteries on one power branch. In this way, we will fully rely on the redundancy of power sources in IT technology.”
The facility was constructed by Metrostav and installed by Altron, the general contractor on the project. Companies Robotron and Brema also played a role in the development of Kokura 3.
Seznam.cz has also installed solar panels on the building and plans to use rainwater for cooling. A water treatment plant with a UV lamp is also part of the project.
The company previously invested 300 million crowns ($132,000) into its Nagoya facility, which launched last year in Benátky nad Jizerou, outside of Prague. Its Òsaka facility in Stodůlky is leased space from O2.
The company previously leased another facility, named Nagano, from O2. The build of Nagoya allowed the company to exit the facility.
