Cypriot telco Cyta has bought a data center on the island nation.

Simplex, a Cypriot data center firm, sold its LCA1 data center to the telco. Terms of the deal were not shared.

LCA1, located in the southeastern coastal city of Larnaca, offers up to 1MW of capacity and is around 1,000 sqm (11,000 sq ft).

The facility was opened in January 2023. Cyta claims that LCA1 is the largest privately owned data center in Cyprus, a claim previously made by Simplex.

Cyta CEO Andreas Neocleous said that the acquisition was not just an investment in technology, but a statement about Cyprus’ data sovereignty. Cyta is partially state-owned.

Michalis Omirou, CEO of Simplex, said the time had come for Simplex to move on.

Cyta’s offerings include fiber optic networks and island-wide 5G deployments. The company also owns and operates subsea cables, and it recently signed an agreement with Italian telco Sparkle to provide its Yeorskipos CLS for the BlueMed cable, which connects Italy with France, Greece, Israel, Jordan, and Libya. The CLS is also connected to the Hawk, Peace, Poseidon, and Tamares North cables.

Simplex was established in 2007. It currently operates another data center, LIM1, in Limassol.

The island of Cyprus is divided between the Republic of Cyprus, where Larnaca is located, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, a de facto state that is only recognized by Turkey.
