The companies behind plans for a Stargate data center project in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have offered more information about the project.
Additionally, a Stargate is potentially being proposed for the APAC region, while JPMorgan and Chase is investing $7bn in the US project.
Details about the massive AI data center campus in the UAE have been revealed. While reports about the project emerged earlier this month, the companies involved, including G42, OpenAI, Oracle, Nvidia, SoftBank Group, and Cisco, have provided greater clarity about the project.
Set to offer 5GW of compute capacity, the data center campus will house Nvidia Grace Blackwell GB300 systems. The first 200MW AI cluster will go live in 2026.
The campus will span 10 square miles, making it the largest such deployment outside the US. The campus will be powered by nuclear, solar, and natural gas.
Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, said: “By establishing the world’s first Stargate outside of the US in the UAE, we’re transforming a bold vision into reality. This is the first major milestone in our OpenAI for Countries initiative—our effort to work with allies and partners to build AI infrastructure around the world. It’s a step toward ensuring some of this era’s most important breakthroughs—safer medicines, personalized learning, and modernized energy—can emerge from more places and benefit the world."
Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia, added: “AI is the most transformative force of our time. With Stargate UAE, we are building the AI infrastructure to power the country’s bold vision – to empower its people, grow its economy, and shape its future.”
OpenAI's Stargate project is a $500bn effort to build massive data centers - originally across the US, but now globally - for the AI developer.
Also in May, Saudi Arabia's AI company Humain announced plans to build up to 500MW of data centers in the Gulf country, with plans to deploy 18,000 GB300 chips for a single supercomputer, with “several hundred thousand” more superchips in the pipeline over the next five years. The GB300 combines the Grace Arm CPU with the B300 GPU.
Stargate eyes APAC location
OpenAI's Stargate project is also reportedly looking at locations in Asia-Pacific.
As reported by Bloomberg, OpenAI is exploring locations in the APAC region, with the company's chief strategy officer, Jason Kwon, set to meet with government officials to discuss AI infrastructure and the AI provider's software offering.
Among the countries on Kwon's list are Japan, South Korea, Australia, India, and Singapore, according to Bloomberg, citing a "person familiar with the matter."
The tour is reportedly part of wider efforts to explore Stargate projects outside of the US. Earlier this month, reports suggested that OpenAI was looking to develop up to ten Stargate data center projects across the world. One of those projects has since been assigned to the UAE.
According to the Bloomberg report, more than 30 countries have expressed interest in participating in the Stargate project.
OpenAI's chief global affairs officer, Chris Lehane, told Bloomberg: “The world understands that we are in a moment. There is an imperative to get access to this technology.”
JPMorgan Chase to invest $7bn in Abilene, Texas, Stargate data center
JPMorgan Chase is set to invest more than $7bn in OpenAI's data center in Abilene, Texas.
As reported by The Information, the company has committed to providing more than $7bn in financing for the construction of the Stargate data center in Abilene, Texas.
The Abilene, Texas, data center is being developed by Crusoe on a site owned by Lancium.
Earlier this month, Crusoe announced that it had raised an additional second phase funding round of its $15 billion joint venture to fund a 1.2GW AI data center campus, with $11.6bn in debt and equity for the site, with the funds managed by Blue Owl’s Real Assets platform along with Primary Digital Infrastructure.
The Abilene site is the flagship site for OpenAI's Stargate effort, a $500bn project to build a number of massive data centers across the US for the AI developer.
Construction of the first phase, featuring two buildings and more than 200MW began in June 2024 and is expected to be energized in the first half of 2025.
Construction of the second phase, consisting of six more buildings and another gigawatt of capacity, began in March 2025 and is expected to be energized in mid-2026. Each of the eight buildings will operate up to 50,000 Nvidia GB200 NVL72s on a single integrated network fabric.
