UK-based colocation and cloud connectivity company Colt Data Centre Services will open a new facility in Frankfurt, Germany, the company’s second in the city.
The 25MW data center will boast 16 data halls over 86,000 square feet, with the first phase expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2020.
Speaking to Data Economy at the facility's groundbreaking ceremony, Detlef Spang, CEO of Colt DCS, said that the data center will employ 20 people and estimated that the company will invest €100 million ($112m) into the project.
Spang also said in a press release: "Frankfurt's reputation as one of the continent's most important data hubs continues to grow. It's a very attractive landscape for data centers: market demand is very high and land purchase is rarely a problem.
"One difficulty with Frankfurt is that it can be challenging to procure land with a good power supply. The good news is that Colt DCS' new West Frankfurt facility has a power substation right next door and several other suppliers in close proximity, ensuring that we have access to reliable and redundant power supplies.”
Colt’s West Frankfurt data center will be the company's fourth in Germany alongside its existing facility in the city, and data centers in Berlin and Hamburg.
The company’s original Frankfurt data center was announced back in 2016 after Colt acquired a greenfield site close to the city center.
