Cipher Mining, the cryptominer firm turned HPC data center developer, has acquired land for a new campus in Ohio.

Late December saw the company acquire a 195-acre site, dubbed Ulysses, that it says could offer 200MW of capacity. Full details on the site's location haven’t been shared.

Cipher has secured capacity from local utility AEP Ohio, and said the site is on track to energize in the fourth quarter of 2027.

The company said the site is “well-suited for HPC given its acreage, energization timeline, availability of diverse fiber paths, and proximity to a major metropolitan area.”

The Ulysses site marks Cipher’s first acquisition outside of Texas. The company said the addition brings its development pipeline to 3.4 GW across eight sites.

Cipher was spun off from Bitcoin mining hardware giant Bitfury in March 2021 and went public via a merger with blank-check company Good Works Acquisition Corp. Traditionally a cryptomine firm, the company is pivoting to offer HPC and AI hosting to larger cloud companies.

Its existing portfolio includes live cryptomining sites around Texas in Odessa (200MW), alongside Alborz and two other joint venture sites known as Bear and Chief (120MW combined). Its Black Pearl site totals 150MW.

The company has multiple other sites in planning and development around Texas, including Barber Lake (500MW), Reville (70MW, due live 2027), Stingray (100MW, due live in 2026), Mikeska (500MW), Milsing (500MW), and McLennan (500MW – latter three due live in 2028/2029).

The company is also planning a large 1GW site in West Texas, known as Colchis. The 620-acre site could be energized in 2028.

To date, Cipher has signed AWS and Fluidstack (in a deal backed by Google) as customers for its HPC developments. The agreements total hundreds of megawatts.

Cipher previously announced a 200MW crypto deal with Standard Power in 2021, with the former set to place mining hardware at a site owned by the latter. It's unclear, however, if the deal came to fruition or if it is linked to this latest announcement.
