A second fire in as many months has broken out at a Chirisa Technology Parks (CTP) data center in Chesterfield County, Virginia.

As reported by WRIC, Chesterfield County Fire and EMS crews today responded to a structure fire at Chirisa Technology Park, located at 1401 Meadowville Technology Parkway. The incident occurred around 11:40am local time.

“The fire is contained to one room,” the fire service said on Facebook. “There are no injuries, and there is no threat to the public. Crews will remain on scene for an extended amount of time to ensure all hot spots are extinguished.”

A spokesperson for CTP told DCD: "Our CTP-01 facility experienced a battery room fire which was contained to one room. There are no injuries, and there is no threat to the public. Fire crews will remain on scene to ensure any hot spots are extinguished. CTP is working closely with the Chesterfield County Fire Department and will provide updates as necessary."

Update: On LinkedIn, CTP said the was caused by a single battery that caught fire.

"We believe the root cause was a manufacturing defect," the company said. "The fire was contained within the battery cabinet enclosure and extinguished by a fire suppression system. It did not spread to the battery room or the building."

"This was the fourth alert of this kind at the CTP-01 facility, which is unacceptable. Given the possible danger these batteries pose to our facility and employees we will be immediately removing and replacing all batteries with units from a different manufacturer."

This is the second fire at the Chesterfield County site in three weeks. On August 20, a fire broke out at the site around 8am local time. Again, Chesterfield County Fire and EMS said the fire was contained to one room and no one was injured. CTP confirmed to DCD that the August fire was also in a battery room.

Fires remain a high risk at data centers, with the combination of high-voltage power, lithium-ion batteries, and water.

This past 12 months have seen fires at an AWS construction site, an Equinix cage, an X data center, an Indian government data center, a Telecom Egypt facility, a SUNeVision cooling system, and Digital Realty's UPS system.

Owned by Chirisa Investments, Chirisa Technology Parks was established in late 2022. Its Meadowville campus, which currently houses CTP-01 with CTP-02 and -03 in development, is largely leased to CoreWeave.

CoreWeave's status page lists an active incident at its US-East-04 region in Virginia. The ongoing incident, which started yesterday (Sunday, September 8), started at 2025 1:37pm UTC. The company said a power event may be affecting node availability, but services remain fully operational for unaffected customers. It's unclear if the fire and the CoreWeave power incident are related.

The Meadowville campus was originally built for Capital One in 2013. The bank first announced it was investing $150 million in building a new facility in Chesterfield County in 2012. After Capital One exited the site, it was then taken over by Chirisa subsidiary Digital Fortress before being pivoted to hyperscale/single-tenant leasing.
