Google is potentially set to be the customer of an upcoming data center campus in Salix County, Iowa.

Local press, including KTIV, reports that the cloud and search giant has expressed interest in a 900-acre site in the county.

Energy company MidAmerican proposed the data center project in question in June 2026 for land bounded by Old Highway 75, 260th Street, and Charles Avenue. At the time, the company said that no end user had been selected.

The land was previously part of Woodbury County but was annexed by Salix City Council in April. Woodbury County has a moratorium on data centers, passed on June 23.

Commenting on Google's interest in the site, MidAmerican Energy said: “This is not a project announcement, development agreement or request for approval. MidAmerican is sharing this information now so local leaders and residents have an early, transparent opportunity to learn more before any formal plans are submitted."

In a letter shared with the Salix City Council, MidAmerican writes: "Introducing Google now is intended to give residents and local leaders an early opportunity to ask questions, share priorities and concerns with Google and consider the potential opportunity with more complete information before any development plans are presented. Introducing Google now allows residents and local leaders to evaluate the opportunity based on facts rather than speculation, while giving Google the opportunity to listen, answer questions, and understand Salix’s priorities before any development plans are presented."

The company further noted that the project would bring an increased tax base, construction activity, and a long-term economic opportunity.

Currently, no rezoning request or development application has been filed for the project.

Salix is located in western Iowa, close to the state’s border with Nebraska.

Google already has a notable presence in Iowa. In June 2025, Google pledged to invest $7 billion in expanding its data center footprint in the state. The company said at the time that this would go towards the development of a new campus in Cedar Rapids and the expansion of its existing campus in Council Bluffs.

The company also has data centers in development in Linn County.
