QTS has been given the initial green light to expand its data center campus in Chicago, Illinois.
First reported by Urbanize, Chicago’s planning commission last week approved a QTS application to develop a new data center at its existing campus, located at 2800 S Ashland Avenue.
News of QTS’ plans surfaced in August via a planned community meeting on the proposals. After securing planning commission approval, QTS will seek the final green light from the Committee on Zoning and full City Council.
QTS is proposing to construct a second data center building on the property, consisting of approximately 366,000 sq ft (34,000 sqm) of data center space across three stories, alongside 80,000 sq ft (7,432 sqm) of office and loading areas.
The company aims to invest $300 million in the expansion.
The campus was a former Sun-Times Press Facility and was acquired in 2014. Blackstone-owned QTS launched a data center there in 2016.
According to QTS’ website, the 26-acre campus currently totals 467,000 sq ft (43,385 sqm); the campus offers 42MW, expandable to a total capacity of 125MW.
