TikTok's parent company ByteDance is considering investing in a data center in Brazil.

As first reported by Reuters and citing "three people familiar with the matter," the company is said to be interested in a "major investment" in a data center in the country that would use wind energy from the country's northeast coast.

Reuters reports that one source told the publication that the initial data center would have 300MW, expanding up to 900MW, while another suggested it could total 1GW eventually.

ByteDance is said to be in talks with renewable energy producer Casa dos Ventos for the project, which would be located in the Pecem port complex on the county's northern coast in the state of Ceará.

TikTok declined to comment to Reuters.

Casa dos Ventos similarly declined to comment on a project with ByteDance, but said that it is "committed to turning the Pecem port into a hub for technological innovation and energy transition."

"The company is developing the country's largest data center and green hydrogen project, which will be powered by renewable energy from its portfolio. In developing both projects, it is evaluating partnership opportunities with companies that can support their implementation."

TikTok has been investing in data centers globally. In March 2025, the company said it would invest $8.8 billion in data centers in Thailand over the next five years.

TikTok typically leases space in colocation providers' facilities.

In June of last year the company revealed it was opening an AI hub in Malaysia at a cost of RM10 billion ($2.13bn) at Bridge Data Centres' (BDC) MY06 hyperscale facility, and in July 2024 was also reportedly considering whether to set up a data center in Australia to support workloads across the Asia Pacific region. ByteDance's Chinese operations also use facilities owned by Bridge DC's sister company, ChinData.

In Europe, TikTok's operations are split between Green Mountain in Norway, and an Irish data center - likely in Echelon's facility.

Casa dos Ventos partnered with Total Energies in 2022 on its wind power portfolio. Reuters reports that the company previously sought a grid connection for a data center project in Pecem but was denied by the grid operator ONS due to stability concerns. The country's Mines and Energy Ministry is now evaluating the possibility for data center projects in the area and other locations in Brazil.

Casa dos Ventos previously signed a long-term supply agreement with OData for energy from the Babilônia Sul wind complex in Várzea Nova, Bahia, Brazil.

The project consists of 80 turbines with a total capacity of 360MW. An undisclosed percentage of its capacity will be offset to OData’s Brazilian data center portfolio.

Brazil's largest data center market is around Sao Paulo, with a secondary cluster in Rio de Janeiro. Ceara, however, does have a small market in Fortaleza with DataCenterMap listing 10 facilities in the area. Operators include Tecto Data Centers, Ascenty, Hostweb, Scala, and Lumen.
