Investment firm Brookfield has acquired two data centers in Santa Clara, California, that one of its companies was leasing.
Citing local property records, BizJournal reports that Brookfield Infrastructure Partners acquired 4650 and 4700 Old Ironsides Drive from Menlo Equities this month for $55 million and $42 million, respectively.
The two companies haven’t made any announcements and didn’t provide comment to BJ about the deal.
Both facilities are occupied by Brookfield-owned Centersquare, the data center operator created via the merger of Cyxtera and Evoque last year.
4650 Old Ironsides is a 124,385 sq ft (11,555 sqm), two-story data center. The facility was expanded in 2012 with an additional 40,000 sq ft. 4700 Old Ironsides spans 90,140 sq ft (8,374 sqm) across one story. Today, Centersquare operates the sites as SFO2-A and SFO2-B, offering a combined 43.2MW across 100,000 sq ft.
Prior to coming under Centersquare's management, the sites were previously occupied by Cyxtera, the operator that Brookfield acquired from bankruptcy 2023/2024.
They have, however, changed hands multiple times over the years. They were once occupied by Exodus, which was acquired from Cable and Wireless by Savvis around 2003, which in turn was acquired by CenturyLink in 2011, the company from which Cyxtera was later formed.
Menlo had acquired both sites in September 2021 from Digital Realty and Prudential. Digital acquired the two buildings in 2005 and formed a joint venture with Prudential Real Estate Investors (PREI) in 2013, initially moving nine facilities into the venture.
US private real estate investment and development firm Menlo Equities developed its first data center in Santa Clara back in 1998. Today, the company owns more than a dozen operational facilities across the US. The company launched Menlo Digital earlier this year, saying it has a development pipeline totaling close to 800MW across five sites in the US.
Brookfield Asset Management has more than $1 trillion in assets under management and is one of the largest investment firms in the world. The company has stakes in a number of data center and tower firms – including Centersquare and Compass in the US, Data4 in Europe, Ascenty in Latin America, Digital Connexion in India, and DCI in Australia – and is a major investor in energy infrastructure supporting the industry.
Last month, Centersquare acquired a portfolio of 10 data centers across the US, including in Boston, Minneapolis, Dallas, Tulsa, Nashville, Raleigh, Toronto, and Montreal.
