Fiber broadband provider Brightspeed has acquired 235 miles of fiber assets in suburban Cincinnati from Cincinnati Communications LLC.

As announced by Brightspeed, the fiber miles are strategically adjacent to Brightspeed fiber network builds currently underway in Ohio and eastern Indiana.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The acquisition comes after the company secured $575 million in capital last month to ramp up its ongoing fiber network expansion.

This acquisition will allow Brightspeed to reach an additional 69,500 locations with its state-of-the-art network.

According to Brightspeed, the acquired assets are located just 11 miles south of Brightspeed's strategic build in Mason, Ohio, and 12 miles east of its Lawrenceburg, Indiana, project.

"These dark fiber assets complement our current fiber network build plan, filling in gaps that help us extend our network and connect even more Ohioans," said Brightspeed COO Manny Sampedro.

"We've already enabled more than 200,000 homes and businesses in Ohio, and this bold investment not only adds tens of thousands more connection opportunities in the Cincinnati area but also allows us to connect people even faster than starting the build from scratch."

The company, which is based in Charlotte, North Carolina, is aiming to provide fiber optics services to up to three million homes and businesses over the next five years, including in many places where fiber and advanced technology have not historically been deployed.

The fiber provider estimates that once the fiber build is complete, its network will reach a total of more than 420,000 fiber-enabled locations across its Ohio footprint.

Brightspeed has passed more than two million premises with its fiber rollout so far. The company said it expects to pass approximately one million additional homes this year alone.

Brightspeed acquired its ILEC (incumbent local exchange carrier) business from Lumen for $7.5 billion back in 2022, covering 20 US states.

That investment expands on the $3.7bn raised last year by Brightspeed.

To date, the company has been awarded $13.8 million in funding from the Ohio Residential Broadband Expansion Grant (ORBEG) program funded through the American Rescue Plan Act, the Broadband Expansion Authority, and BroadbandOhio to extend its planned fiber network across Ohio.
